Pause. Breathe. Begin.

Augustine
Confessions, Book X, §8
“I have become a question to myself.”
C O N T E X T
Augustine of Hippo, writing around 397 AD, created the first autobiography in Western literature. In this pivotal line, he moves beyond asking questions about God or morality — he becomes the question itself. The self is not a text to be read but a mystery to be inhabited.
I I . M E D I T A T I O
“Have you ever become a question to yourself — not seeking answers, but sitting with the mystery of who you are?”
I I I . S C R I P T I O
Write one sentence about the part of yourself that remains most mysterious to you.
I V . C O N N E X I O
Augustine introduces uncertainty into self-knowledge. Unlike Socrates's confident questioning, Augustine is bewildered by his own depths. Is confusion a sign of failure or of genuine depth?
